Lately, there seems to be a lot of interest in local schools’ standardized test scores and education choices in general. While Lakeview Montessori doesn’t participate in the provincial EQAO testing, the students take the Canadian Cognitive Aptitude Test (CCAT) which is designed to determine a child’s aptitude for learning. At LMS student’s individual learning is valued and the CCAT test is administered at the beginning of each school year to provide baseline scores. It is administered again at the end of the school year to measures each student’s individual progress over the school year. The priority at LMS is to assist each child in reaching his full potential and beyond.
The 2013 CCAT results report more than 75% of Lakeview’s grades 1-6 students scored above the national average of which 35% scored in the upper 80+ percentile
This multiple choice test assesses a child on their learning potential in three areas of verbal, quantitative and nonverbal.
• Verbal Abilities (verbal classification, sentence completion, verbal analogies)
• Quantitative Abilities (quantitative relations, number series, equation building)
• Nonverbal Abilities (figure classification, figure analogies, figure analysis)
Students do not need to prepare for this test and should just simply be encouraged to do their best. Results from the CCAT will be sent back to the school later in the year for the teacher and support staff to review. The results may provide a better insight into a child’s learning aptitude and will assist the school in programming for the child.
You are invited to visit Lakeview Montessori and spend time in some of classrooms to experience the Montessori way of learning. Class sizes are small and offer an exceptional child-teacher ratio: 1:5 with toddlers, 1:8 with pre-schoolers and 1:15 with elementary students. Also, you are welcome to speak with parents or board members who have chosen the less-traditional, but quite enriching, philosophy to education.
