In Casa we are learning about simple machines! Looking at books, real models, pictures and doing experiments in the classroom, we learned about Pulley. The Pulley experiment was definitely the highlight of the week, using grooved wheels and rope we lifted and lowered a bucket way above our heads in our classroom.
We also introduced the simple machine which is made up of two parts, the wheel and axle. We explained that they work together to lift things or move things much faster and more easily. Cars, skateboards, bicycles are some of the things that use wheel and axle, which the children are very familiar with. We talked about how heavy things can be difficult to push across a surface, and how adding wheels to the bottom would make it easier to move things. A rolling pin, ceiling fan, faucet handle, door knob were some of the pictures we looked at that have a wheel and axle. We even started making pin wheels which showed clearly the two parts of the wheel and axle.
Now having finished the first group of the simple machines that belonged to the lever family, we will move on the the second family which is the inclined plane family!
