Intermediate students received a lesson about different types of bridges and the strengths and drawbacks of each. They then had to put that knowledge to use by building a bridge. They were given a limited amount of supplies and their only stipulation was that the bridge had to be at least 30 cm in Length.
They were given 5 minutes to discuss and plan/design on paper and 30 minutes to construct. Their goal was to create the most stable and sturdy bridge. We informed them that we would be adding weight to each bridge to test how well it could hold up under pressure!
Each team was expected to explain the type of bridge that they built and why they designed it the way they did. They discussed some of the forces at work, the ways they increased stability, the use of certain shapes to make their structure stronger, and anything else they thought the audience should know. They were so excited throughout this challenge.
They were cheering every time we added more weight!
